We have made great strides in reducing the number of deaths from HIV and AIDS in the U.S. and other countries, including the realization that HIV/AIDS can be cured, yet we are still years away from a vaccine and a cure. Until this happens, discrimination, complacency, criminalization, deaths and our government's reluctance to adequately fund necessary programs remain a growing concern.

I hope that the people who perpetrated the horrible acts that occurred at my employer, or any employer, read this and understand that it is not OK to discriminate against someone for having HIV and that because of people like them discrimination still persists today. The same applies to people who claimed to empathize with me but yet do not want to get involved because they are worried about themselves. Having gone through this, I know that if I experience discrimination again or witness discrimination of a fellow employee, I will never hesitate to stand up for myself or another person because discrimination is wrong.
