VLOG: Is Oral Sex... Sex? Is It Safe Sex?

Gwenn enjoying a pre-election drink.

Tuesday night was a good night.  As someone with two very expensive medical conditions in hemophilia and HIV, I can rest a whole lot easier knowing that President Obama will remain in the White House for another four years.

Today's vlog is all about oral sex- here's my and Gwenn's opinion on the matter!

Positively Yours,

It sounds like, from the blog, that you guys engage in oral sex where Shawn is the receiver and utilize condoms, with mint being the preference:) I'm curious though if you use any barrier methods when engaging in oral sex with Gwenn on the receiving end. Is there any risk of transmission there?

Thank you:)

Hey Hope- thanks for the question. Yes, I am the giver as well. We don't use barrier methods because the chances of transmitting the virus by performing oral sex on a woman are incredibly, incredibly low. With my viral load being undetectable, and the fact that I keep up with my oral hygiene, I'd say it's pretty much impossible for me to transmit to Gwenn this way.

In terms of HIV, to say that oral sex is less risky than unprotected anal doesn't give any indication of scale. How much less? This video seems at odds with advice given in the forums where oral sex is only a theoretical risk and not a proven transmission risk. This video says it is a proven transmission risk. Might be worth clearing up the confusion. My own 20 years of oral sex with men without protection leads me to believe the forums HIV position over this videos position. However you are quite correct about other infections such as gonorrhoea.

Hey Fred,
Thanks for checking out the video. Gwenn says HIV "could potentially be transmitted" through oral sex, which is basically the same as saying theoretical risk. The CDC claims that there have been a few cases of HIV transmission from oral sex, which I felt was important to include. In the grand scheme of things if there have only been "a few" documented cases in the last three decades, then that speaks volumes about where oral sex stands on the risk scale.
We just wanted to do a basic video about the topic that hopefully leads people to other resources, because here are so many people out there who think they can't get anything from oral sex.
